This skill separates $0 apps from $10k MRR
Hey there,
You can build a flawless app with clean code, smooth UX, and zero bugs and still make zero dollars.
Building an app is not the hard part anymore. AI changed the game completely.
Most technical founders never learn what the most important thing is.
They assume great products market themselves and wonder why nobody shows up.
“Yeah but I have great features.” The market doesn’t care.
In 2026, marketing is the #1 skill that matters in the mobile app game.
And since tools like Rork let anyone ship an app in a weekend, the gap between building and marketing just got bigger.
When I launched PuffCount I was posting TikToks every day for two months.
I didn’t know much about app marketing.
Many died at 200 views. I was embarrassed.
My friends were watching me post cringey videos that went nowhere.
Then I stopped trying to invent content and started studying what was already working.
Typed "quit vaping" into TikTok.
Filtered by most popular of all time.
Built a spreadsheet of every viral format, hook, and storyline.
There was this one video. A girl taking apart a vape on camera, showing the battery and coil inside, talking about her 7-year addiction. 3.7 million views.
I recreated that exact format. Took apart a vape, showed what was inside, said "check out this app if you need to quit" for two seconds at the end.
That video hit 2.6M views. 4,000 downloads in 24 hours. More than the previous three months combined.
Marketing felt like a different language until I realised it runs on the same logic as building:
find what works, test it systematically, scale the winners.
You already shipped an app, which is more than most people ever do.
Now it's time to learn the research framework the same way you learned to build.
Peace,
Steven
