You can’t get lucky if you never ship
Hey there,
In 2016, I was 17 and built a mobile app called Wordle.
It never really took off. A few thousand downloads, then nothing. I gave up and forgot about it.
Fast forward to 2021. Some guy named Josh builds a web game called Wordle that goes viral globally.
Suddenly, my phone starts buzzing non-stop.
My old app is getting downloaded like crazy. I thought it was a glitch.
Turns out, millions of people were searching for Josh's viral game, hitting the App Store, and downloading mine instead.
Here's where it gets wild:
Dozens of developers rushed to copy Josh's game. Apple removed every single one... except mine.
Because I was the original. Built 5 years before anyone else.
Apple wiped out all the competition and my Wordle became the #1 game in the world.
My forgotten app got downloaded millions of times in a few weeks.
Ad revenue exploded. Made enough to donate $50k and completely change my trajectory as a founder.
That moment taught me the most important lesson of my career:
You can't get lucky if you don't have anything to get lucky with.
Most founders are still planning their perfect app while opportunities like this pass them by. They're waiting for the perfect moment instead of building and shipping.
Luck finds builders, not planners.
Peace,
Steven
